10 Ways to Keep Your Health Goals Going

  1. Avoid liquid calories – This includes sodas, juice, fancy coffee and tea, and especially alcohol. A large latte can have as many as 290 calories!
  2. Plan your meals – This is harder than it seems. If you don’t have time to go grocery shopping for fresh ingredients, many meal delivery services are offering discounts for the new year. Be sure to always have healthy snacks on hand so you aren’t tempted to hit a drive-thru.
  3. Look beyond the scale. Do your clothes fit better? Do you feel good? Is your health improving? Focus on goals beyond a number on the scale.
  4. Get up and move! Find an activity that you enjoy. Take a dance class, try yoga, go for walks with a friend. Nobody can spend hours on a treadmill without getting bored. Find something that makes you fit and happy.
  5. Rest. That’s right, rest. Take time to unwind and let your body repair itself with a restful night of sleep, so you can wake up refreshed and prepared for a productive day. Sleep deprivation leads to overeating and fatigue – not good.
  6. Eat mindfully. Take your time and enjoy your meals. Sit down, use a real plate, and be present in the moment. Chew your food thoroughly and savor the flavors. Carry a healthy snack if you get hungry away from home. Scarfing down a cheeseburger while you are driving is the opposite of what we are going for.
  7. Drink plenty of water. We have all heard this over and over. Water is great for your body, mind, skin, mood, and can help curb cravings.
  8. Keep a food journal. Keeping track of everything you eat can help you see where your calories are coming from. Try an app like My Fitness Pal, it’s free.
  9. Be realistic. It takes time to see results. If it was easy and fast, everyone would be healthy and fit.
  10. Be kind. If you hate broccoli don’t eat it. If you love chocolate have some. Be kind to yourself, but also remember that eating healthy is also a way to do that.
